A funeral will be held tomorrow for the officer killed in Santa Maria last weekend.
The family of Officer Albert Covarrubias Jr. says services will begin at one in the afternoon at the Dudley Hoffman Funeral Home in Santa Maria.
It will be followed by a burial at the Santa Maria Cemetery. His father said no officers will be allowed to attend, but it is open to the public.
Covarrubias was shot by fellow officers after resisting arrest.
Cabrillo High School graduate Mike Sullivan won his second Super Bowl ring on Sunday. Sullivan was the New York Giants wide receivers coach in 2008 when the Giants won a championship and is the quarterbacks coach on the current team. The Giants beat the Patriots 21-17 for the Super Bowl 46 title and Sullivan's number one responsibility, quarterback Eli Manning, was named the Most Valuable Player.
Sullivan was a standout as a football player at Cabrillo in the mid 1980's, he helped the Conquistadores to a 10-2 season and Los Padres League championship in 1984. Sullivan went on to play football at West Point where he eventually became an Army Ranger.
Sullivan was a wide receiver, defensive back and kicker at Cabrillo. His coach for all three of those positions was Jarrett Tennant. Tennant describes Sullivan as, "very intense, a smart kid. Basically he was a coaches dream."
In an interview with the Santa Barbara Press in 2008, Sullivan credited Tennant with helping shape him as a mentor. Sullivan said about his former coach. "I try to pattern myself after him, his passion, his enthusiasm."
Reading that was a great moment for Tennant who has so much respect for Sullivan.
"Quite frankly it made the hair stand up on my back. He used to tell me he used my mannerisms."
Living on the other side of the country and working long hours, it's been a while since Sullivan has made it back to the Central Coast.
"He does 70 hours a week during the regular season. He called me one night just before the Super Bowl in 2008 and It was 10 o'clock here so it was one o'clock in New York, he was still there. Unbelievable hours" says Tennant.
Those hours appear to have payed off for Sullivan, the quarterbacks coach has helped Manning to his best season. Sullivan has established a reputation for himself in coaching circles as one of the most prepared people in the business and his star is rising. Multiple media reports suggest Sullivan might be a candidate for the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator position.
It's been one accusation after the next for Police Chief Lisa Solomon and the City of Paso Robles.
10 days ago, allegations of unwanted sexual advances and retaliation were published in an article in Cal Coast News.
Then on Friday, a Paso Robles Police Officer filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming illegal ticket quotas.
Now, questions about the public's safety have surfaced, as the city is forced to operate with 14 fewer officers than it did in 2007.
Chief Solomon spoke to KSBY, but would only address the issue of public safety... and nothing else.
Saturday, Cal Coast News released an internal memo from Chief Solomon to City Manager Jim App.
It highlighted just how police officers respond to calls after a 34-percent decrease in the number of officers on the street.
The numbers show a department working within a budget stretched to its limits.
During a hiring freeze the police department lost 14 sworn officers, dropping from 41 in 2007, to the current number of 27.
"We are maintaining safety in this community, and we're doing it with reduced resources in the most efficient and effective way possible," said Chief Solomon.
To make up for the loss, Chief Solomon implemented a service reduction plan, designed to prioritize calls.
She said there are 3 to 4 patrol officers on the street on any given night.
If that number drops to two, police go in to a safety response mode.
"In our safety response level, we preserve our officers to be able to respond to our most emergency and in depth calls that are happening right now," said Chief Solomon.
The plan also delays response to calls that are deemed low priority.
They include suspicious person, vehicle or circumstances calls, DUI, theft reports, and drug activity. Chief Solomon said, they've gone into safety response mode 589 hours since February of last year.
"If you calculate that out, that's 24 days out of the entire year, most of that time was less than four hour increments," she said.
The memo also says property crimes under $10-thousand dollars will not be referred to a detective, but a patrol officer will follow up if they have time.
"There is a chance that something under the $10-thousand dollar mark, if there's not significant leads and so forth, that it may be delayed or put on the back burner or not responded to as quickly," said Chief Solomon.
This as Chief Solomon and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department rolled out "Operation Safe Streets", last September, to combat a growing gang problem.
KSBY asked Chief Solomon, is the city safe with 27 sworn officers protecting it?
"Yes, absolutely. I think an important thing is to look at the city's crime statistics. In fact, total part one crimes which are the major crimes that are measured across the country, are the lowest they've been in ten years. These are difficult times for us, and difficult times takes courage in leadership," she said.
She said the hiring freeze for the police department was recently lifted, and they can hire three to four new officers.
She told us they're working to fill those positions.
The owner of a local bar has two good reasons why he couldn't decide who to root for in the Superbowl.
Tom Rehder owns Mongo's Saloon and Restaurant in Grover Beach, and he played in the NFL. He got drafted by the New England Patriots, but he won a Superbowl with the New York Giants in 1990.
He doesn't think that the Eli Manning-led Giants stack up to the team he played on.
"Lotta talent that year. And we were on a roll. But then again, the game has really changed, the players have changed, they have a different technique. But, of course, I'm always going to pick my year," said Tom Rehder, owner of Mongo's Saloon and Restaurant.
Rehder says, whoever wins, he wins, as he has great memories with both teams.

Bakersfield junior guard Stephon Carter missed both free throw attempts during the next possession, but, with a chance to tie the game, the Mustangs turned the ball over. The Roadrunners than hit two free throws before another Royer three cut the Bakersfield lead to 68-66 with 10 seconds to play. With four seconds left Carter hit one of two free throws for the Roadrunners. Senior point guard Amaurys Fermin had a shot to tie from just past half court and missed it at the buzzer.
